Xiamen Immersion Reflection- Grace Koh 4F

Wushu Overseas Immersion Cum Training Programme in Xiamen
I participated in the Wushu Overseas Immersion Cum Training Programme in Xiamen organised by the School between 27/5/2012 and 3/6/2012.
After five days of rigorous training regime, it was time to have fun!  On Friday afternoon, we visited the place that I had heard so much about, the Tan Kah Kee Memorial Hall. We learnt that Mr Tan Kah Kee was a prominent philanthropist and community leader who set up many schools such as Jimei Schools and Xiamen University in China, The Chinese High School and Tao Nan School in Singapore. There was even a model of Chinese High School in the memorial hall. Tan Kah Kee was a very hardworking man. He started his own business after his father’s business collapsed. He built his empire from rubber plantations and manufacturing. His business was so successful that he became very rich. With his wealth, he donated a lot of money to charity and also financially supported the Chinese efforts in the Second Sino-Japanese war which broke out in 1937.
Tan Kar Kee died from cancer at the age of 86. Two thousand people attended his funeral. He was indeed a great man and was very well respected. When I grow up, I would want to emulate his good example to be a charitable woman.
On Saturday, we went to Gulangyu Island. Gulangyu Island is renowned for its beautiful beaches, winding lanes and varied architecture. My favourite part of Gulangyu Island is the Piano Museum. We learnt that Australian Overseas Chinese Mr Hu Youyi chose his ancestral home for this Asia’s largest piano museum, which now have 100 pianos from UK, Germany, Austria and Australia, as well over 100 priceless piano lamps. I also saw many different types of pianos, such as a L-shaped piano and one with the ebony and ivory keys arranged in the opposite positions. It was just so interesting!  Gulangyu Island is to Xiamen is Sentosa is to Singapore. Both are famous tourist attractions, but I think Singapore’s Sentosa is better because there is Universal Studio.
We were treated to a meal of sumptuous food on the last day. The host was Edna’s uncle. My favourite was the ‘popiah’ which was a very popular dish in Xiamen. We were so happy that we made a bee line for the soft drinks table and after being deprived for so many days. The chicken wing which I had was the most delicious chicken wing I had ever eaten before.
It was indeed a fruitful and enjoyable trip.
