Wushu Immersion Programme- Alexander Loh Zen Young
I really enjoyed the 8 days Wushu immersion programme to Xiamen, China.
6.30 in the morning, my room-mate, Ryan, and I woke up with the noises of my alarm. As we climbed out of bed, I drank a packet of milk before brushing my teeth and changing out to go to breakfast. Every breakfast, I would always go and get "mee sua" from the counter. Ryan and I finished early and went back to our room, 302, to rest for a while.
8.30 in the morning, we grabbed our bags and together with our friends, went down to the lobby to go to the training place. On our way there, we saw oversized worms. Once we arrived, we warmed up and continued to learn "鷹爪拳" from Zheng Lei Shi, one of the China champions. He also gave a demonstration on how to do "鷹爪拳" properly. We then had a photo taking session with him and another coach. Then, we proceeded to lunch. After lunch, we took a coach to the Tan Kah Kee memorial area. We watched movies, saw China and Singapore's history, ancient artifacts, turtles, how he contributed to both China and Singapore and lastly, his tomb.
In conclusion, I would want to visit China again.

REFLECTION : XIAMEN TRIP- Amelia Lynge 5C
Of course, I
enjoyed my time in Xiamen. I learnt a lot from this experience, like how to be
independent. I have realized how lucky I am to be in Singapore when I saw all
the beggars on the streets. We have no beggars in Singapore!
The eight days in
China has been the longest time I have been without my parents so far in my
lifetime. It has given me an idea of how life will be like overseas on my own
when I am older. My first night in Xiamen was sleepless as I was very homesick.
Nobody was there to nag me to sleep, tell me stories and tuck me in. Luckily, I
got used to my sleeping surroundings and slept well the next few nights.
I also improved my
oral communication in Chinese. I am now skilled at using Room Service,
especially in Chinese! The ladies from Room Service were very nice to Edna and
I, and they praised me for my well-spoken Chinese although I am not a full
Chinese. I was proud of myself as Chinese is not my mother tongue and yet
people say that I speak the language well. I hope I can go to China again and
further improve my Chinese oral communication in future.
The training I
went through also helped me to understand more about Wushu tactics and
techniques. In Singapore, I thought that I was very good at Wushu. However, in
China, I realized that I was nothing compared to the Jimei University team. The
trainers taught us ‘ Eagle Claw’ , a routine that not many people know how to
do in Singapore. Learning something unique and unusual is something to cherish
forever, and that is what I did. The trainers were also very patient with us
although we could not do things properly. I will always remember the trainers
and the Jimei University team and I hope I can see them again.
Going home to
Singapore was as hard as leaving to China. I was scared that I would forget my
experience after I left Xiamen. Fortunately, I can still remember clearly how I
spent my days in China. Besides bonding with other people from China, I also
built an even stronger friendship with my own friends from Nanyang Primary
School. I learnt how they spend time and behave at home. I hope I can have
another experience like this as I will leave Nanyang Primary next year and will
go to secondary school. I do not want to forget my primary years.

8 days Wushu Immersion Programme to Xiamen- Anders Koh Hong Kai (4A)
8 days Wushu Immersion Programme to Xiamen
On 27th
May, we all met at the airport at 6.10am. I came the earliest as I was very
excited to go to Xiamen, for the next 8 days we will commence the Wushu
Immersion programme in Xiamen.
When we
reached Xiamen, there was a bus to pick us up. The bus took us to Xiamen Jimei
University Hotel. All of us were given rooms. Our teachers gave us some time to
put our bags in the room. After we put our bags down, we walked to the
supermarket. I bought one cup noodles while my partner, Ernesto, did not buy
anything. After everyone finished buying everything that they wanted, we went
back to the hotel to have our dinner.
The 4 ½ days
of Wushu training started from 28th May to 1st June. My
favourite day of the 8 days is Thursday, 31st May, as I could see my
family! They came to visit me at the hotel and also bought Macdonalds for all
of us to eat. They also brought some drinks for all of us. I missed them a lot
so when I saw them, I felt very happy.
On Friday and
Saturday, we finally got a chance to visist Xiamen’s places of Interest, such
as Memorial Hall of Tan Kah Kee, Turtle Garden, China Overseas Musuem, Nanputuo
Temple, Hulishan Canon platform, Gulang Island and Zhongshan Road. I like
Hulishan Canon platform the most because I get to see the old fort and many
ancient cannons.
The training
is tiring but I enjoyed it because we can learn a lot from the teachsers. It is
an eye opener for me to see Xiamen and learn Wushu especially the Eagle stance.
I wish we could have stayed for another one or two days more.

My Thoughts and Reflections for Wushu Immersion to Xiamen-Ling Yin 5C
The moment we touched down in Xiamen, we
were all happy. Although I left Singapore with a heavy heart, I knew this trip
would be good for me. As I could learn to be independent and at the same time improve
my Wushu.
Upon arrival we went to the university
hotel that we were going to stay at for the upcoming 8 days. After taking a
short rest in the hotel, we headed for the supermarket. It was a rather long
walk to the supermarket and my legs were very tired. After finishing our
shopping, we headed back to the hotel. On the way back, we were complaining of
aching feet.
The next four and a half days was training.
Every morning, we had to walk a long distance before arriving at the training
area. Thus, we all found out that Jimei University was a rather big University.
During the training days, we learnt a new
routine, the ‘Eagle Claw’. The actions in the routine were supposed to be
imitating the eagle.
Friday had finally arrived, I was elated as
on that day we had only half a day of training and outings started on that day.
The first place we went to was the turtle garden. I was expecting to see
turtles there but it turned out that it was called turtle garden because of a
famous businessman and educator, Mr Tan Kah Kee’s grave was built there in the
shape of a turtle shell, thus its name.
The next day, we visted Hulishan Cannon
Platform. We learnt that the Chinese in China hated the Taiwanese. They thought
of the Taiwanese as traitors who were always supporting Sun Yat Sen.
We also visited a tea house. There, we
tasted 4 different teas. They were all special and unique. We learnt that in
Yunnan, the women did the work, and of course climbing up trees to pick tea
leaves were done by them too.
We then proceeded to Gulang Island. This is
a island that was near Xiamen. We visited the piano museum that was at
Shunzhuang garden. We saw many nice pianos of the past.
Dinner that day was at a five star hotel in
Xiamen. We learnt how to roll popiahs by ourselves. After dinner we went to
Zhongshan road.We went shopping! That was the BEST part of the entire trip. We
were all exhausted and tired after a day of outing but we sure had fun!
We departed the next day. We were all happy
and excited about going back to Singapore, though we would miss everyone we met
here. We would get to see our parents again!
I feel that this trip was a good experience
for me. Training was also a test of perserverance. It has helped my wushu to
improve. Overall it was fun and I hope to go for more of such activities.
Reflection on Wushu @ Xiamen Immersion Trip- Ben Chek Jun Kiet 4 respect (敬) /M
I had never thought that I would go to Xiamen and practice Wushu. But when
I saw the opportunity, I persuaded my parents to let me go. I had never
regretted going on this trip. In Xiamen, we had our training in two different
locations. One was old and dusty in the morning while
the other was a big covered stadium in the afternoon. Both are co-located on
the same university compound, reflecting Wushu has a place in the past and
modern sport.
Upon learning the
history of Jimei University at the Tan Kah Kee memorial area, I realized why
some buildings looked old, and why some looked new. Some of them were built
during his time, and I think that when the people decided it was too old they
built another training ground.
For the first day,
we were only trained on the basic such as horse stance. For a moment, I really
lamented on the monotony. But on hindsight, it was useful. Not only did it strengthen
my foundation for advance Wushu, I was taught basics that were not in school. Although
our training was intensive and tiring, the coaches were kind and helpful. These
had really helped me to overcome the anxiety and lack of confidence.
Finally the
training had come to an end. My hard work and exhaustion bore some payback.
While not any near proficient, I learned a new martial art – ying zao quan.
That made me delighted. The end of this chapter also signaled the start of the
much anticipated tour. However, the tour was a little hurried at the Hu li shan
cannon platform, which I did not like. Still, I knew that most guided tours
were like that and we had time constraints and schedules to meet.
In Xiamen, the streets were quite ‘antiquated’, but the monuments looked
new. Perhaps, the streets were over-used. It was definitely very different
compared to Beijing.
During this trip, I learnt many new and wonderful things. Thank you
teachers for giving me the opportunity to learn!
Xiamen Immersion Reflection- Grace Koh 4F
Wushu Overseas Immersion Cum Training
Programme in Xiamen
I participated in the Wushu Overseas Immersion Cum Training Programme in
Xiamen organised by the School between 27/5/2012 and 3/6/2012.
After five days of rigorous training regime, it
was time to have fun! On Friday
afternoon, we visited the place that I had heard so much about, the Tan Kah Kee
Memorial Hall. We learnt that Mr Tan Kah Kee was a prominent philanthropist and
community leader who set up many schools such as Jimei Schools and Xiamen University
in China, The Chinese High School and Tao Nan School in Singapore. There was
even a model of Chinese High School in the memorial hall. Tan Kah Kee was a
very hardworking man. He started his own business after his father’s business
collapsed. He built his empire from rubber plantations and manufacturing. His
business was so successful that he became very rich. With his wealth, he
donated a lot of money to charity and also financially supported the Chinese
efforts in the Second Sino-Japanese war which broke out in 1937.
Tan Kar Kee died from cancer at the age of 86. Two
thousand people attended his funeral. He was indeed a great man and was very
well respected. When I grow up, I would want to emulate his good example to be
a charitable woman.
On Saturday, we went to Gulangyu Island.
Gulangyu Island is renowned for its beautiful beaches, winding lanes and varied
architecture. My favourite part of Gulangyu Island is the Piano Museum. We
learnt that Australian Overseas Chinese Mr Hu Youyi chose his ancestral home
for this Asia’s largest piano museum, which now have 100 pianos from UK, Germany,
Austria and Australia, as well over 100 priceless piano lamps. I also saw many
different types of pianos, such as a L-shaped piano and one with the ebony and
ivory keys arranged in the opposite positions. It was just so interesting! Gulangyu Island is to Xiamen is Sentosa is to
Singapore. Both are famous tourist attractions, but I think Singapore’s Sentosa
is better because there is Universal Studio.
We were treated to a meal of sumptuous food on
the last day. The host was Edna’s uncle. My favourite was the ‘popiah’ which
was a very popular dish in Xiamen. We were so happy that we made a bee line for
the soft drinks table and after being deprived for so many days. The chicken
wing which I had was the most delicious chicken wing I had ever eaten before.
It was
indeed a fruitful and enjoyable trip.
